Tuesday is the day when many of the marchés are open with fresh produce coming in, since the previous day is closed. There are a total of 32 marchés open on this day. I recommend the marché marked in red.

The best place on Tuesdays is the St. Charles marché (08:30-20:30), where I always go to buy my family’s food. It’s cheap, the food is good, and you can buy daikon (Japanese radish) and Chinese cabbage, just like in Japan. But it’s a bit far unless you have to go to the Eiffel Tower or plan to shop at BeauGrenelle.

*Many of the radishes sold in France are black radishes with black skin and often contain loose fibers. You can read more about the differences between Japanese and French vegetables here.

These four indoor marches are the best places to go while you’re doing something else.

Indoor Marché at Les Enfants Rouge (8:00 – 20:00), where you can go while you shop in the Marais.
For those who have plans in the Bastille, Aligre’s Indoor Marché (9:00-13:00/ 4:00-7:30 pm)
Couver St. Quentin (7:00 – 14:30) near the North and East stations where you can stop before the TGV transfer.
Couver Batignolles* (8:30-13:00/3:30-20:00), about a 10-minute Uber ride from Sacre Coeur

*If you want to go to Batignolles from Sacré Coeur, you should get off the park behind Sacré Coeur Temple and go to Dandelion Organic Butcher, the butcher in the market. (Link to Google map of the route)

It’s a marché in the Marais area, it’s indoors, and it’s a great place to have lunch here after you’ve done some shopping, since it’s indoors and there aren’t many days off. If the weather is nice, you can buy some prepared food here and eat it in the Parc du Temple, a little further west.This is the oldest indoor marché in Paris, built in 1615 and renovated in the 90s. The name comes from the color of the clothes of the orphanage (moved in 1777) that once stood next door. There is a very good bistro called “Les Enfants Rouges” nearby, which is also recommended.

The largest indoor marché in Paris. It’s a good place to stop by in the morning on a moving day because it’s close to Gare de l’Este and Gare du Nord. They have a lot of deli items, so it’s fun to buy a deli here and eat it while taking the TGV. The prices are a little reasonable. There are a lot of shops, so I recommend you to buy at the shops where the locals are lined up, because they don’t like expensive shops.

This is one of the marchés I go to the most. I often take my friends there when they come, it’s a great place to see and reasonably priced. There is also a bakery called Blé sucré, famous for its croissants, and the best restaurant in Paris, Virtus (a Michelin star), is close by. There is a great cheese shop in the indoor marché, the larger of the two shops.

Marché Saint-Charles

This is the marché I go to most often. The potato shop pictured in the photo is my favorite, and their potatoes, called Grenouille, a small potato that Mr. Bocuse is said to like, are the best in Paris and overpriced. The greengrocer across the street from this potato shop is also good quality and affordable, and there is also a horse meat shop coming on the left side of the street towards St. Charles from October to February (if you don’t mind). A nearby bakery wins first place in Paris for its croissants and éclairs, and I recommend this one too. You can take a break at a cafe, but often you stay long enough to have lunch.

This is an indoor marché in a suburban area. The Côte de Bouffes (loin steak with beef bones) was about 27 €, which is about 30% cheaper than what you’d get in the 7th arrondissement, but the outside wall of the marché is also quite graffiti-heavy and a bit less Parisian. There is a beautiful park nearby, so you can buy some snacks to eat in the park before you go.

Marché Bourse

The marché is located right next to the stock exchange (back of the picture). It’s very late in the morning for a marché, but it’s also convenient that they open till 8:30 pm. It is not far from Opera Garnier, Petit Palais, Louvre, etc., so you can buy dinner at this marché and have it at your hotel while you are sightseeing.

Marché Maubert

This marché is right near La Maison d’Isabelle, the best croissant in Paris in 2018. It’s a convenient location, so you can go here in the morning, buy some fruit, croissants at Isabelle, have a picnic along the River Serre, then visit Notre Dame, Shakespeare Company, etc… It’s going to be a very pleasant day.

Marché Port-Royal

The marché on the south side of the Luxembourg Park. Right next to the museum of the French military health department. One of the open-air marchés that was created in the 1920s when the indoor marchés were closed. At the same time, Monge (1921) marchés Raspail (1920) and Télégraphe (1922) were created.

This marché is the most building-like of all the indoor marches. It’s in the St. Germain area and it’s easy to get to, but slightly more expensive. It’s a good place to stop when it’s raining or when you’re in the area, but it’s often crowded with tourists, so it’s all rather expensive. When we tried to buy a fruit, we were charged a premium without a cash register and the change was cheated, so it was a bad impression, but the fishmonger was a nice guy, but expensive.

Marché Raspail

I’ve never been to Raspail on a weekday, but it’s not far from the Parc du Luxembourg and Bonmarche, so it’s easy to go there while you’re sightseeing. There’s a great butcher shop called Yves Marie Bourdonnec on the way from this marché to Bonmarche, so if you’re staying at an Airbnb, it would be so much fun to buy meat at Raspail and beef at Yves’. The meat from Yves here is quite expensive at 100€/kg, but it’s delicious, and the meat is carefully cured, so it’s very tasty (there’s not much to explain about the marche). Oh, yes, the marché has a long history, dating back to around 1920.

The smallest marché in Paris, 62 meters long! It’s at the Madeleine train station, so you can go there while you shop or once you get off the train when you change trains. The closest place to the Opera is this marché. It’s also close to Mailles, famous for its mustard, and the flagship shop of Hermes.

It’s an indoor marché, but in an area I’m a little uncomfortable with. I don’t like the Strasburg St. Denis station because it smells like pee… the stuff they have isn’t bad and the prices are reasonable. I might stop by if I’m passing by, but I don’t feel like I need to go all the way there.

As you can see from the picture, it’s not a French marché, but a marché with an exotic flavor. I think it’s interesting to go there if you’re staying around here or along metro line 2. You can buy weird spices for cheap, and the prices in the city are cheap and there are lots of great Chinese food options, so I recommend Best Tofu or Northeast Dumpling Shop after visiting the marché.

Marché Père-Lachaise

This marché is located in the 20th and last arrondissement of Paris. If you like music, it’s a great place to stop by the Edith Piaf Museum or something like that. Just north, you’ll find the 2018 Baguette Competition Champion 2M. It’s great just to get a ham cut from the marché and eat it in a baguette. It’s about a 10-minute walk to Père Lachaise Cemetery, where Balzac and Oscar Wilde’s graves are located.

Marché Popincourt

Located just east of the Marais, in an area called Oberkampf, this marché is an easy place for tourists to visit while shopping. This open-air marché was founded in 1903 and was created during the 1870-1900 renovation of Paris. There’s also a restaurant with a butcher shop, Bidoche, just around the corner and it has a great atmosphere, so it’s a good place to visit. It’s a good idea to bring an insulated bag.

Why the marché in Saint-Honoré? It’s an area where you’ll want to say.Saint-Honoré is a street of world high brand stores. It’s open until night on Wednesdays and until the afternoon on Saturdays, so you can stop in while you shop. Nearby, I recommend Restaurant LUMEN, an Italian restaurant near the Louvre, which is really good. Highly recommended.

Marché Daumesnil

It’s the longest marché in Paris and it takes about 20 minutes to walk normally (lol), and it’s a whopping 1385 meters long. It’s affordable, has a lot of shops, and is a great place to visit if you like marchés. It’s very close to Gare de Lyon station, so if you have some time to spare before you get on the TGV, you might want to go there to buy some fruit and vegetables. The bus stop for the direct bus from the airport is also close by, so if you arrive early in the morning and have a little extra time on your hands, it’s a good idea to stop by.

There are a lot of Asian people around Piazza Italia, so you can find Asian foodstuffs, and overall foodstuffs are reasonably priced. There are many Asian restaurants around here, so you can go to a marché and buy some honey as a souvenir, then have pho for lunch. Don’t worry about the lack of registered restaurants, it’s the work of the French. As you can see in the picture, there are definitely more than 10 restaurants, lol.

I can’t comment on the area as I’ve never been there, but it’s a suburban area marché so the prices are reasonable and the quality varies. I’ve bookmarked about 400 restaurants, cafes, etc., but there were none near here at all, so I’m not sure I’ll ever go there again. (That’s why I’m sure I’ll find something unexpected when I go there. lol)

I’d recommend the area for people who are just visiting Paris for the third time rather than the first time, such as the Gare d’Austritz train station, the botanical gardens and the Grand Mosque. Prices are affordable and things aren’t too bad. If you have time, I recommend VenteEphemere, a children’s clothing store located at the next stop on the RERC line, François Mitterrand Library Station, where the petit bateau is very cheap.

The marché is not far from the Danfert-Rocheleau station on the RER-B suburban train line, which comes from Montparnasse and Orly airport. It’s an affordable marché because of the low cost of living nearby, and if you’re staying nearby, you can buy breakfast at the marché, eat in the park, relax and have lunch at Bistro Kigawa!

Marché Convention

The Marché de la Convocation has been recommended to me by someone who lives in Paris. It’s not moderately central, so it’s reasonably priced, and there’s also a Korean restaurant near here that his wife (who is Korean) likes best in Paris, Seongsan, and a pastry chef, Laurent Duchêne, who also works for a Japanese guy, is super tasty, so it’s a good idea to combine a lot of things. Buy some honey, spices, and cheese as a souvenir, have lunch at Songsang, and then stop at Duchêne’s for chocolate and croissants on the way home, etc…

Marché Gros-la-Fontaine

The area is not far from the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty is located down by the River Seine. It’s a bit inconvenient to get to, but if you need to go near there, this is a great place to visit. The prices are reasonable due to the location, and if it’s a marché day, Sushi Gourmet is open nearby, so you can have sushi on the way home after shopping at the marché. That restaurant is reputed to be delicious even among the Japanese.

Marché Porte Molitor

On Tuesdays, you can hustle with the Pointe Jour marché, which is about a 5 minute walk away. Passy is in an upscale residential area, very close to the Eiffel Tower and other landmarks, so it’s a nice place to live. The marché is located a little further out in the suburbs. It’s safe to say that it’s open indoors, and they are open many business days, even on rainy days. There are several cafes along the street where you can have lunch. But if you want to get here, you can go to Marché Couvert de Levallois) (Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays: it’s wide open if you go from 7 to 1pm) on the other side of the same station, about a 10-minute walk away. The marché is close to the flea market in Clignancourt. It’s also a 10 minute walk from my favorite restaurant, L’arcane. It’s very inexpensive, but it’s surprisingly crowded and you’ll probably get tired if you go there on the way to see the sights (lol).

Marché couvert La Chapelle

The Marche is located further north from Gare du Nord. The area may be a little bit difficult for Japanese tourists to visit, but there are many good shops around here. If you look at a partridge for 6€ per bird, I think you can get it for about 50-70% of the city price. If you go there, I recommend you to go to Cafe Romi beyond the overpass, or BOB’S BAKE SHOP in the south.

Marché Place des Fêtes

One of the 25 marchés that came into existence after the closure of the indoor marchés (1870-1900). This one was founded in 1893, and it’s affordable because it’s in the 19th arrondissement and a suburban area of Paris with low land prices. You can get exotic foods from Africa and the Middle East, but it’s a bit far away. If you’re staying at an Airbnb or other nearby place, I’d suggest going there.

Marché Crimée-Curial

One of the marchés held along the boulevards des Maréchaux in the suburbs of Paris. The marchés Brune (1933), Lefebvre (1934), Berthier (1935), Porte Brunet (1937), and Crimée (1938), which were started after the demolition of the wall that once stood on the boulevards, are all exciting marchés for history buffs. I don’t think you have to go all the way to the city. Maybe if you wanted to buy groceries on the cheap and lived along the 5th subway line.

Located in the 20th arrondissement in the suburbs of Paris, it was the first marché to be opened after World War II when the Nazis occupied the city and it’s very affordable, and if you’re staying in the vicinity, it might be interesting to visit, There is also Poniatowski (1951).
