Every year in May, during the Fête du Pain* (bread festival), a croissant competition is held. But in 2020, due to COVID19, all of France was locked down until May 11… and in 2020, the croissant competition could not be held.
*Since the feast day of Saint Honoré, the patron saint of bakers, is May 18, there will be a national baguette competition, Parisian croissant competition, and a hands-on class for children in the heart of Paris on the island of Cite around that time.
But where do we find the best croissants this year? So, French VOGUE has published “Palmarès des meilleurs croissants à Paris en 2020” (ranking of the best croissants in Paris in 2020), which you can read here.
This is a VOGUE ranking, so there are a lot of fashionable stores.
The results of the Paris Regional Croissant Competition from 2017~2019 and the list of winning stores since 2007 are listed in the second half of this report.

Classement du Meilleur Croissant d’ile de France au Beurre AOP Charente Poitou
The official name of the croissant competition is
The “classement du meilleur croissant d’ile de France au beurre AOP Charente Poitou”.
Charente Poitou (region called Poitou-Charente), the best croissant contest in ile de France (Ile de France), made with butter made according to the AOP (nationally certified method).
The Poitou-Charentes region is the birthplace of the famous Échiré butter.
AOP refers to the rules of origin when naming a region, such as the Champagne region, where a champagne must be made with specified ingredients and methods.
And the often-heard Ile de France region is the name of a region in north-central France, centered on Paris.
The winner of the 2019 Croissant Competition is LA FABRIQUE AUX GOURMANDISES La Fabrique aux Gourmandises (14th arrondissement, Paris)
The first place winner, Lionel BONNAMY, is a boulangerie that won 10th place in 2017 and 18th place in Paris in the Galette des Rois in 2020. Galette des Rois and croissant dough are so close together that many stores perform well in both.
In the city of Paris, there are many awards in the 15th and 14th arrondissements again this year. There are not many Paris city centers (single-digit districts) again this year… Turquier, in fifth place, is a boulangerie that won in 2015. They’ve moved to a main store nearby, and this time they’re winning with a second store (I like that the two stores have different holidays).

2018 results: the winner is La Maison d’Isabelle (Paris 5e)
The first place winner, Maison Isabelle, had Boulanger’s last name written as Pichard. This name… and then it’s the son of La Maison Pichard, the first place winner in 2017.
Paris is mostly in the 15th and 14th arrondissements. We have a map in the second half of the year, but Paris has a concentration of award-winning stores mostly on the Left Bank, and closer to the south. The second place Blangerie is near the Marché in Saint-Charles. It has a cafe and I recommend it.

Results of the 2017 Croissant Competition: the winner is La Maison Pichard (Paris 15e)
There are four houses in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, including the first place winner, Maison Pichard. This bias is interesting because the baguette competition has little bias from district to district.
The Tuesday marché I go to once a week is in the 15th arrondissement, so maybe I’ll go buy a batch next time. After the third one, there’s a good chance I’ll get tired of the butter and won’t find it tasty… lol.

Map of past 10 years’ winners and 2017-2019 winners (Google Map)
This is a map of the winning stores of the 2017-19 croissant competition (yellow-green/2019 blue/2017 and 18) and the stores that won first place from 2009 to 2019 (yellow heart/2017-19 is pink).
If you have one near where you live or stay, try it out. You’ll be amazed at the consistency of the dough, the crunchiness, the different buttery flavors, and the deliciousness.
